Bullet Points

  • VoIP / Hosted PBX

This month, we will be installing a new phone system here at High Caliber. Instead of using conventional line cords and connecting them to phone jacks, we will be using Ethernet patch cords and jacks to connect our phones to a T1 line, which in turn will connect us to a giant phone switch or PBX located off premises. Doing this has many advantages including:

    1. Reduced up-front and monthly costs
    2. Enhanced call-control features that increase productivity
    3. Ability to run our business from anywhere, even if our building is not accessible

  • Top 6 Security Concerns

Here, then, are the top 6 issues that small businesses face in their efforts to secure their information, according to recent research:

    1. Lack of a crisis management plan. When was the last time you thought about business continuity?
    2. Unreliable backup procedures and technology. How many of you test your backups regularly and religiously move backups off premises?
    3. No written policies and procedures. Email and web use, handling of laptops and portable storage devices. Password construction and resets. All of this and more needs to be clearly defined. Without clear leadership, employees can’t be expected to understand or care.
    4. Too much emphasis on isolated aspects of security. What good is a strong firewall if someone can simply walk in and out with backup tapes?
    5. Employee access. Employees connecting from non-secure computers at home represent just as much of a threat as if they had malicious intentions.
    6. Software patches. Many vulnerabilities are exploited because software is not up to date. You are paying good money for it, so why not have the latest version?
